What is D-Mannose?
D-Mannose is one of the most beneficial cystitis remedies available but it is not yet very well known, even by doctors. In the US, one doctor who has been using D-mannose in the treatment of cystitis is Dr. Michael Blue (Urologist, Norman, Oklahoma). In a clinical trial he conducted with his patients, he found that 71% reported either symptoms improvement or to be completely free of their cystitis symptoms.
The bacteria that causes cystitis and bladder infections have finger-like projections on their surface which manage to attach to the bladder lining causing irritation. D-Mannose is able to rid the bladder of these bacteria because when the urine is saturated with D-mannose, bacteria are preferentially attracted to the D-mannose, over and above your bladder lining. Once they have formed a complex, the bacteria are then passes out with the D-mannose in the urine.

Natural Remedies - Cranberries
Most people have heard that cranberry juice can be helpful in cystitis. This is because it helps prevent the negative bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall.
However, this is rarely effective enough if an infection is already established. A more effective natural treatment for cystitis is D-Mannose.
This is a glyconutrient (a type of healthy natural sugar) that has been found in testing labs to attract some bacteria such as E. coli, latching onto it and helping the body pass the infection out via the urine.
How does D-Mannose work?
The bacteria that causes cystitis and bladder infections have finger-like projections on their surface which manage to attach to the bladder lining causing irritation. D-Mannose is able to rid the bladder of these bacteria because when the urine is saturated with D-mannose, bacteria are preferentially attracted to the D-mannose, over and above your bladder lining. Once they have formed a complex, the bacteria are then passes out with the D-mannose in the urine.
Urine flow and beneficial bacteria which live in the urinary tract will usually prevent an infection from taking hold, but if there is insufficient urine flow (dehydration) or obstruction such as the bladder being squashed such as in pregnancy, urine will be 'hanging around' too long giving the bacteria more chance to cause irritation and inflammation.
